2011-2012 MCCPTA Reflections Award of Excellence and Award of Merit Winners

Feb 13, 2012   //   by taralouisecramer   //   extracurricular, Mustang Mail, PTA  //  No Comments

Congratulations to our Award of Excellence Winners for winning Outstanding interpretation of the Theme, and who now move on to the Maryland State Competition! Congratulations, too, to those students winning an Award of Merit. We are fortunate to have very, very talented students at Potomac, who sensitively contemplate the world around them. The topic of diversity was not necessarily an easy concept to grasp, and we received some lovely works depicting the subject! Good luck to all of the students moving on to the Maryland State competition. The following students received recognition: For Dance Choreograph in the Primary Division, an Award of Excellence was given to Bianca Bonci; and in the Intermediate Division to Zoe Schaap; for Musical Composition in the Intermediate Division, an Award of Excellence was given to Justin Hung and an Honorable Mention to Embrik Eyles; for Photography in the Primary Division, an Award of Excellence was given to Alexander Lindsay and an Honorable Mention to Shirin Ghorbani, and in the Intermediate Division an Award of Excellence was given to Bilal Zafar; and finally, for Visual Arts, in the Intermediate Division an Award of Excellence was given to Amberly Wu.

To see these and other fabulous works that our students created for Reflections, go to the Potomac Elementary web site and click on the tab “Arts Integration,” and then “Arts Reflections Contest Winners.” A PowerPoint file is attached that holds lots of photographs and details from our Art Night last fall.

Please be thinking ahead to next year’s contest! The theme for 2012-2013 will be “The magic of a moment…” The National PTA is looking for theme ideas now for the 2013-2014 school year, and if your student has ideas, the deadline for submission is December 5, 2012. The student who submits the winning entry will receive $100.

Thank you to all of the students who participated, and to the PES families and school staff who supported this program so enthusiastically!

Holiday Adopt A Family Gift Drive

Dec 10, 2011   //   by taralouisecramer   //   community service, Mustang Mail, PTA  //  No Comments

Every AM class is collecting gifts for specific children that currently reside at the Greentree Shelter in Bethesda. Your child should bring home a pink ditto this week that lists name, age and in some cases a specific wish request. We are asking for new and unwrapped gifts.  The most popular items are ipod shuffles, african american dolls, easy bake ovens, matchbox and tonka cars and trucks, sports equipment, arts and crafts kits, lotions and bath sets, gift cards (which will go to the office for safe keeping) to McDonals, Target, Old Navy, The Mall, etc. ), movie passes and remote control cars.  A more detailed list can be found on the PES Website.

Thank you for fulfilling these children’s wishes, and please know that you are making the holidays a special time for the children at the Greentree Shelter.

Our drive starts Monday, December 5 and runs through Wednesday, December 14

Please contact Marcie Robinson orSusan Kohler with any questions.

Nov 7, 2011   //   by taralouisecramer   //   Mustang Mail, PTA, school  //  No Comments

Art Night 2011 is next week, Wednesday,November 16 from 6:00 – 8:00!  PES has just been re-certified by the Kennedy Center arts integration specialists as a CETA school — “Changing Education Through the Arts.”  This means we have renewed our partnership with the Kennedy Center and next week will be an arts integration celebration as much as a celebration of your childrens’ artistic talents!

We will have special guests from the Kennedy Center participating in our art galleries and teacher-led arts integration stations.  Our theme this year is Where the Wild Things Are, and each grade will have a special interactive station where children will dance, sing, make music, create pieces of art, and otherwise dramatize Max and his many monster friends.

Our judges have given placements to each of the grade level arts entries categories in the Reflections contest, and every child who participated in the Reflections contest will receive a school PTA ribbon.  We will display works of art from every student at PES, both in the gym and throughout the hallways of the school.  Slice of Old Towne Pizza will be selling pizzas, hot dogs, salads and drinks for the evening.  Please come join us for this special night and Let the Wild Rumpus Begin!” Please don’t forget to sign up to help!!!

Walk For the Homeless

Oct 2, 2011   //   by taralouisecramer   //   activities, Mustang Mail, PTA  //  No Comments

HELP THE HOMELESS MINI-WALK

Monday, Oct. 10

WHAT: Our students and staff will show their commitment to our neighbors in need as we participate in a Mini-Walk during recess to benefit Interfaith Works

WHO WE ARE HELPING: Interfaith Works provides shelter, housing, clothing, food and counseling to more than 35,000 of our neediest neighbors.

Based on total number of walkers who register, walk sponsor Fannie Mae will award a generous grant to Interfaith Works for its exceptional work with the homeless!  Your donations also provide crucial funding to support the homeless.  Interfaith Works will be presenting a brief program to our children prior to the walk about homelessness.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:  Montgomery County has a serious, growing problem of homelessness. Half of the homeless in our area are families, and 30% are children…

The average age of a homeless person in the U.S. is 9 years old!

This walk calls attention to the problem.

HOW TO SIGN UP:

Fill out 1, 2 & 3 on the Registration Form.

Make a donation if you choose ($20 is suggested for youth, but any amount large or small helps). If you cannot make a donation, please return a signed form anyway. Your completed form helps Interfaith Works win a major grant based on student participation. Each student returning a signed form  will get a free tee-shirt commemorating the Walk.

IMPORTANT: A parent or guardian MUST sign the registration form

Thank you for your support!
