We are looking for a few amazing individuals who are willing to join the PTA Board for the 2022-23 school year. Next year, we will have several vacant PTA board roles and several committee chair opportunities. At the end of May our nominating committee, consisting of Maryellen Grant, Fred Olowin, and Kimberly Nugent, will submit a complete set of board members for approval by the PTA General Membership.
The PTA Board supports PES students, teachers, and administration by: organizing and recruiting parent volunteers, raising funds and managing a budget, keeping families informed, and complying with the state and county PTA guidelines. The board meets once a month for about 90 minutes; positions are for a full year and often extended as board members are interested.
Open Positions include Membership, Programs, and Events Directors. See brief descriptions for each position below. Everything expected in these four roles has been done for a good number of years, and a current board member will be happy to show you the ropes.
Please let us know if you would like to be considered!
Position descriptions:
Membership Chair (2022-2023 Board Position): The membership chair keeps track of the number of memberships sold and the dues paid to National and Local PTAs. They also act as a de facto merchandising chair, tracking inventory, ordering items, and ensuring people get their freebies. Membership chair also assists in keeping the online directory updated by working with admin and MemberHub tech support to upload information. Comfort with MS Excel necessary in this position.
Programs Director (2022-2023 Board Position): The programs director acts as a coordinator between the school, county facilities and the PTA. They work with current vendors and investigate new vendors if necessary to provide before and after school programming for families. He/She will aid vendors in creating a schedule, navigating the MCPS room rental system, and marketing these programs to families. The Programs Director may also be responsible for ongoing school programs that are managed through the PES PTA (such as the pre-covid Hanging with the Mustangs half day activities if reinstated). The busiest times of year for this position are August, December, and early spring.
Events Director (2022-2023 Board Position): The events director oversees all events not managed by committee chairs and/or works with the board to find chairs for events. Event chairs may include current board members, and some events already have chairs. Back-to-school picnic, spring fair, ice skating social, dames/dudes and donuts, grandparents’ day, kindergarten orientation, teacher appreciation week, etc. all fall under the umbrella of events.
MCCPTA (County) Delegate (2022-2023 Board Position): One of two MCCPTA Delegates is open, to be the PES PTA’s connection with the county PTA. Delegates attend one (1) MCCPTA (Montgomery County Council of PTAs) meeting per month (in addition to the Potomac PTA board meeting), the 4th Tuesday of the month in the evening. Delegates report relevant information obtained from the MCCPTA meetings to the PES PTA and may be asked to field questions from families and/or survey specific topics. The delegates, along with the president hold three (3) county-level votes belonging to the school. This is a great position for someone looking to understand the inner workings of MCPS and to make an impact on all schools.
